The Leipzig builder Felix Steib erected the commercial building named after him in 1907. Although he designed it as a trade fair palace, it served – like many other buildings along Nikolaistrasse – the fur trade. More than 700 fur companies were based in the area around Brühl, Nikolaistraße, Reichsstraße and Ritterstraße around 1930.
