Great Festival in Jiufen, Taiwan

For translation please use the Google Translate Button my site.

In May 2019 I traveled in Taiwan. My first stop was at the capital Taipei. From there I took the popular day trip to Jiufen, a mountaintop former gold mining town on the northeast coast with magnificent views. Many historic buildings from Taiwan’s time as a Japanese colony have been preserved. The large selection of typical street food and the tea houses are also very popular.

Jiufen is as well favoured by tourists because of the unconfirmed rumour that the town centre served as a model for the japanese anime film „Spirited Away“ („Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland“).

During my visit a festival with a big parade took place. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find out what they were celebrating. But the procession featured menacing looking figures and was accompanied by very loud noise, so I don’t think they were celebrating Buddha’s birthday …

This is for Lens-Artists Challenge #177 – Celebrating, a great challenge, thank you Leya for hosting!

Always looking forward to your feedback. Do you happen to know which festival they celebrate in Juifen in May?

  1. We were in China for Chinese New Year and these costumes and lanterns reminded me a bit of that. Personally they rather look like the stuff nightmares are made of! Excellent choice for the challenge though!

  2. Großartige Figuren! Schade, dass wir nun nicht wissen, worum es bei dem Umzug ging. Vermutlich läuft es wie meistens auf den ewigen Kampf des Guten gegen das Böse hinaus…
    Viele Grüße
